Verbal commitment and National Letter of Intent (NLI) get used interchangeably online. They should not be. One is typically a public or private statement of intent; the other is a formal document with defined rules when it applies.

Verbal commitment (practical meaning)
A verbal usually means the athlete and coaches have agreed — in conversation — that the athlete plans to attend. It can be announced on social media. It is not automatically the same as a signed NLI or aid contract.
Questions to ask after a verbal:
- What paperwork comes next, and when?
- Is athletic aid involved, and in what form?
- What happens if either side wants to reopen recruiting?
National Letter of Intent (high level)
Where the NLI is used, it is a formal signing process paired with institutional aid paperwork. Signing windows and obligations are specific. Do not rely on message-board summaries.
